Supreme Court Rules in Amistad Slave Ship Case

An 1839 portrait of Joseph Cinque, or Sengbe Pieh, by New Haven, Conn., abolitionist and painter Nathaniel Jocelyn. Cinque was the leader of a group of Africans who, in 1839, overthrew the crew of the slave ship La Amistad.

The Amistad case brought attention once again to the issue of slavery in the United States. At the time, slavery was legal and an important part of the country’s economy.
