Chinese authorities have arrested at least a dozen security officers accused of beating to death a man trying to film them in the central province of Hubei. The official Xinhua news agency says construction company manager Wei Wenhua was driving his car when he saw the officers scuffling with villagers and stopped his car.
Citing a Wei colleague, who was a passenger in the car, Xinhua says Wei got out and began trying to use his cell phone to film the incident. The colleague, Wang Shutang, says the security officers became angry and continued to beat Wei, even after he gave up his phone. The news report says Wei stopped breathing when he reached a hospital.
Xinhua says at least five villagers were injured in the clash on the outskirts of Tianmen City. The report says members of the Chinese public are upset about the incident and have posted thousands of comments on Internet discussion boards.
