The U.S. military has announced one of its largest bombing missions in Iraq in months, striking a stronghold of al-Qaida in Iraq on the southern outskirts of Baghdad.A military statement issued Thursday says warplanes dropped more than 18 thousand kilograms of explosives on what were described as terrorist safehouses in Arab Jabour. The aerial bombardment lasted for 10 minutes, and there were no immediate reports of casualties.
The bombing was part of a nationwide offensive targeting strongholds of the al-Qaida in Iraq group.U.S. officials say successful counter-insurgency operations in Baghdad and Anbar province have pushed al-Qaida-linked groups to Diyala and other northern provinces, where a U.S. offensive is under way.
