The U.S. military in Iraq says its warplanes have bombed a suspected al-Qaida safe house in the western part of the country, near the Syrian border.

The air strike, early today (Thursday), specifically targeted what the military said was a "known bomb-making cell leader" (Abu Mohammad) who was also believed to have participated in tribal fighting in the area. It was not clear if he was confirmed killed in the strike near the town of Husaybah.

In other news, rescued American hostage Roy Hallums is reported in good health and is expected to return to the United States within days. The U.S. military says within three hours of obtaining information on where he was being held from an Iraqi detainee they launched a successful mission Wednesday to free him.

Police and National Guard troops are going door-to-door in hurricane-stricken New Orleans in a search for people who have not complied with the mayor's mandatory evacuation order.

More than half the city remains underwater 10 days after Hurricane Katrina overwhelmed levees designed to keep the low-lying city dry.

Several thousand residents have defied the order to leave despite repeated warnings about contaminated floodwaters, numerous fires, and a shortage of basic supplies.

The overall official death toll from Katrina remains under 300 in the states of Louisiana and Mississippi, but authorities are prepared for the number to soar as the New Orleans floodwaters recede and more bodies are found.
