布希強烈譴責極端伊斯蘭 (Bush Fiercely Condemns Militant Islam)

布希總統否認美國駐軍伊拉克進一步強化了伊斯蘭激進分子。他說，在美國攻入伊拉克之前激進伊斯蘭就已存在，而且，用他的話說，當伊拉克“不再是一個藉口時”，仍會繼續存在下去。

President Bush has denied that the U.S. military presence in Iraq has galvanized Islamic radicals. He says militant Islam existed before the invasion and will continue to exist once Iraq, in his words, is "no longer an excuse."

Mr. Bush spoke Thursday at the National Endowment for Democracy in Washington. He fiercely condemned militant Islam -- which he called an ideology turned towards the past and based on the denial of human progress.

Opinion polls show declining American public support for the president's Iraq policy. There is also less than two weeks to go before a crucial referendum on the new Iraqi constitution. President Bush said the United States and its allies have disrupted 10 serious terrorist plots around the world, including three in the United States, since the attacks of September 11th, 2001. He provided no details.

Suicide car bombers carried out two attacks in Baghdad Thursday, killing 11 people. Meanwhile Iraqi President Talabani met with British Prime Minister Blair in London ahead of Iraq's constitutional referendum. Fear of increased violence before next week's referendum was one of the topics President Talabani and Prime Minister Tony Blair were expected to discuss.

At a joint news conference after their meeting, President Talabani said the presence of American and British troops in Iraq is "absolutely vital," and no timetable for their departure has been set.

Prime Minister Blair said new, more dangerous explosives are being used in Iraq, and there are unproven suspicions they are coming from Iran or its Lebanese ally, Hezbollah.
