China has criticized a plan by the U.S. Congress to present Tibet's exiled spiritual
leader, the Dalai Lama, with its highest civilian medal next week. Chinese Foreign
Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao told reporters Thursday the ministry strongly opposes the
plan to give the Dalai Lama what he referred to as the "so-called" Congressional Gold
Medal.
The spokesman said China opposes any attempts by any person to use the Dalai Lama to
interfere in its internal affairs. China challenges attempts by the Dalai Lama to meet
with world leaders, accusing him of secretly promoting separatism. Last month, the Dalai
Lama met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
President Bush will attend the congressional ceremony, which will be held next week。

(China Criticizes South Korea for North Korean Defectors) |
|

China has accused South Korean diplomats of interfering with Chinese police during an
attempt by four North Koreans to seek refuge at a South Korean-run school in Beijing. The
North Koreans entered the school and hid in a bathroom, but they were chased onto the
roof by about 30 Chinese security personnel who arrested them.
A Chinese foreign ministry spokesman said South Korean consular officials interfered
during the incident and tried to prevent the arrests. He said their actions violated
international law and their own status in China.
Thousands of North Koreans, fleeing famine and repression, have traveled across the
border into China in recent years. China views many as economic refugees and often
returns them to the North, where they face harsh treatment for trying to defect.
