The office of the French presidency says President Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife, Cecilia, have divorced by mutual consent.
An Elysee Palace statement confirmed the split, which was widely reported in banner headlines of French newspapers and magazines.
The couple has rarely been seen together since Mr. Sarkozy took office in May. On Monday, it was announced that Cecilia would not accompany her husband on a state visit to Morocco next week. The couple married in 1996 and have a 10-year-old son, as well as two grown children each from previous marriages. |

A powerful blast has rocked a crowded shopping mall in Manila's financial district, killing eight people and injuring 70 others.
Police say the blast today (Friday) at the Glorietta shopping center in the Makati business district caused extensive damage, toppling roofs, destroying walls and sending debris crashing onto cars outside.
Authorities initially said the explosion was caused by a gas cylinder, but later discounted that statement and now say bomb squad teams are investigating the incident. A security alert has been issued for the rest of the city. |
