The Philippine coast guard has detained 24 Chinese nationals on suspicion of poaching in Philippine waters off the southwestern province of Palawan.

Philippine officials say a coast guard patrol spotted the Chinese fishing Saturday near the island town of Balabac, in southern Palawan. The officials say 23 Chinese men and one woman were captured after a brief chase as they tried to reach Malaysian waters. Coast guard says they found fishing equipment on the Chinese boat, along with fish that had just been caught.

Under Philippine law, poachers can be deported, jailed, or face fines of up to 100-thousand dollars.

Philippine authorities have frequently detained Chinese fishermen near Palawan. The government has appointed a special committee to handle their cases in a way that avoids straining Manila's relations with Beijing.

Hungary is marking the 50th anniversary of the country's 1956 uprising against Soviet rule, while police and anti-government protesters clashed in Budapest.

Dozens of world leaders, including 20 European heads of state, joined the official celebrations in central Budapest.

A block away, police used batons to disperse protesters who have been camped near the parliament building since mid-September. The protesters want the resignation of Socialist Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany, who acknowledged he lied about the nation's economy to win elections earlier this year.

The official commemorations began with the raising of the national flag. Dignitaries then laid flowers at the foot of a monument honoring participants in the 1956 uprising.

At least 26-hundred Hungarians died battling Soviet troops, and historians say 200 others were executed for their roles in the uprising. More than 200-thousand others fled to the West.
