| President Bush is to
outline his administration's strategy for dealing with a possible bird
flu pandemic today.
U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt says the plan's
main goal is to boost the nation's vaccine manufacturing capacity.
In television interviews, Mr. Leavitt said there is no sign of an imminent
flu pandemic, but the nation must be able to produce vaccines for every
American.
He said the president will ask Congress for seven-point-one billion
dollars to fund the plan. The plan also calls for the government to
stockpile vaccines and anti-viral drugs, and try to detect any flu outbreak
early.
The administration has already ordered 162-million dollars worth of
vaccine to protect against Asian bird flu, which has killed more than
60 people in Asia since late 2003.
