China has opened its first anti-doping agency and a state-of-the-art laboratory in Beijing for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. The China Anti-Doping Agency, which has the backing of the government, opened with an inaugural ceremony on Monday.
The agency is expected to carry out around 45-hundred drug tests during the Beijing Olympics. In addition to serving as a testing site, the agency will help coordinate a campaign against illegal factories that make steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs.
Agency director Du Lijun called doping one of the biggest challenges faced by the Olympic movement. He also said the lab will be inspected by the International Olympic Committee later this year.
