中國證實人患禽流感病例 (China Confirms First Human Cases of Bird Flu)

中國衛生部證實了中國首批3例人禽流感病例。官方的新華社星期三說，湖南發現2例，安徽1例。早些時候，中國和世界衛生組織的官員說在等待湖南省一名男孩的化驗結果。男孩的姐姐上個月出現了禽流感症狀後死亡。一組世界衛生組織人員正在這一地區調查她的死亡情況和其他可能的禽流感病例。

中國官員誓言要對全國所有家禽進行免疫接種。在和中國接壤的越南，有關官員正在設法宰殺胡志明與河內這兩個主要城市的所有家禽。自從2003年以來，東亞有60多人死於禽流感。

China's Health Ministry has confirmed the country's first three human cases of bird flu. The official Xinhua news agency Wednesday says two cases are in Hunan province and one is in Anhui province. Earlier, Chinese and World Health Organization officials had said they were awaiting final test results on a nine-year-old boy from Hunan whose sister died last month after suffering bird flu symptoms. A WHO team is in China to investigate that death and other possible bird flu cases.

Chinese officials have vowed to vaccinate the country's entire stock of poultry. In neighboring Vietnam, workers are trying to kill all poultry in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. More than 60 people have died of bird flu in East Asia since 2003.

美議員促布希爭取中國異見人士獲釋 (US Lawmakers Ask Bush to Seek Release of Chinese Activist)

一些美國國會議員要求布希總統敦促中國領導人釋放被監禁的中國學者和民主活動人士楊建利。楊建利2002年被捕，並被以間諜和非法入境的罪名判處5年監禁。楊建利是美國永久居民，參加過天安門廣場民主示威。

美國議員在給布希總統的信中說，只有布希總統親自向中國國家主席胡錦濤提出，楊建利才能獲得釋放。布希和胡錦濤訂於11月19號在北京會談。北京是布希亞洲之行的其中一站。

A group of U.S. lawmakers has asked President Bush to press his Chinese counterpart to release Yang Jianli, a jailed Chinese scholar and democracy activist. Yang Jianli was arrested in 2002 and sentenced to five years in prison on charges of spying and illegal entry. Yang is a permanent U.S. resident who was involved in the Tiananmen Square democracy protests.

In a letter to Mr. Bush, the lawmakers say nothing less than a personal appeal from to Chinese President Hu Jintao will secure Mr. Yang's release. Bush and Hu are scheduled to hold talks in Beijing on November 19th as part of Mr. Bush's Asian tour.
