The government of Mexico has ordered thousands of soldiers and federal officers to the western state of Michoacan to combat violent drug gangs. The gangs are believed to be responsible for a wave of killings, mutilations and beheadings in the state.

Interior Secretary Francisco Ramirez Acuna said Monday the government is looking to take back spaces that the gangs have seized. Drug traffickers have been fighting for control of parts of Michoacan state where they cultivate and transport marijuana, opium poppies and other drugs. They have killed hundreds of people. Mexican officials said the government intends to arrest drug traffickers and establish control points on highways and secondary roads.

Iraqi police in the northern town of Mosul say gunmen have killed a cameraman working for the Associated Press. Police say Aswan Lutfalla was having his car repaired when a firefight broke out nearby. He went to film the clash and was apparently deliberately shot by gunmen.

Lutfalla is the second AP Television News cameraman to be killed in Mosul in the last two years.

Last week, a U.S. press advocacy group said 89 journalists have been killed in Iraq since the U.S. - led invasion in March 2003.
