Chinese state media say U.S. drug maker Pfizer has won a court case in
China against two companies which were copying its immensely popular male
impotency treatment, Viagra.
The official Xinhua news agency said that a Beijing court ordered
Lianhuang Pharamceutical Company and Beijing Health New Concept Pharmacy
to stop sales of pills similar to Viagra. The court also told Lianhuang
Pharamceutical Company, based in Jiangsu province, to pay Pfizer more than
38-thousand dollars in compensation.
Pfizer sued the two companies in 2005. Local drug makers have stepped
up patent challenges in hopes of being allowed to market generic copies of
various drugs. But foreign companies including Pfizer have repeatedly
called on China to tighten patent protections, copyrights and trademarks.
