受歡迎報紙編輯被撤記者罷工抗議 (Reporters Protest Firing of Popular Newspaper Editor)

北京一家受歡迎報紙的記者罷工,抗議該報的總編輯和兩名副總編輯被解職。來自中國的消息說,至少有100名新京報的記者星期四停發新聞。這一罷工行動之前一天,該報總編輯楊斌在會見了該報股東光明日報的負責人之後被解職。

解職原因沒有說明,不過維護新聞自由的國際組織“記者無國界”說,這一舉措的部份原因是政府試圖進一步控制媒體。新京報以經常刊登文章和評論批評政府以及一些社會問題而知名。

Journalists at a popular Beijing newspaper have walked out to protest the dismissal of the newspaper's top editor and two deputies. Accounts from China say at least 100 reporters at The Beijing News stopped filing articles Thursday. The walkout comes one day after the editor-in-chief, Yang Bin, was dismissed in a meeting with the heads of the Guangming Daily, which partly owns the newspaper.

The reasons for the dismissals were not released, but Reporters Without Borders, an international media freedom group says the move was part of an attempt to tighten government control over the media. The Beijing News is known for printing sensitive articles and editorials about the government and social issues.

International media rights watchdog Reporters Without Borders says it is shocked and dismayed by the dismissals, and urged the reinstatement of the three editors.

埃警察驅散蘇丹難民抗議十人喪生 (10 Dead As Egyptian Police Break Up Sudanese Refugee Protest)

埃及官員說,在埃及警察試圖結束蘇丹難民為時三個月的抗議示威時發生的衝突中,至少有10名來自蘇丹的移民喪生。這次衝突星期五清晨爆發,持有棍棒和水槍的防暴警察衝擊了開羅一個富有居民區內的一個小型廣場。目擊者說,警察在把抗議示威者送上大客車,並毆打他們。

埃及內政部長說,儘管政府方面試圖通過和平方式解決問題,但是這些移民的首領卻訴諸暴力。埃及內政部說,抗議者造成的擠踏造成10人死亡,但是在場的記者說沒有看到任何擠踏。

這些蘇丹難民要求聯合國難民署重新審核那些被拒絕的難民申請,並且恢復把難民在主要是美國、加拿大和澳大利亞等第三國安置的做法。聯合國難民事務高級專員公署表示對暴力和人員喪生感到震驚。

Egyptian officials say at least 10 Sudanese migrants have been killed in clashes with police trying to end a 3-month-long Sudanese refugee protest. The violence erupted early Friday when riot police armed with sticks and water cannons stormed the small square in an affluent Cairo neighborhood. Witnesses say police beat the protesters as they loaded them onto buses and carried them away.

Egypt's Interior Ministry said migrant leaders resorted to violence despite government attempts to settle the problem peacefully. The ministry said a stampede by the protesters caused the 10 casualties. But reporters at the scene say they saw no stampede.

The Sudanese refugees were demanding that the U.N. Refugee Agency review cases of asylum-seekers whose applications the agency has rejected, and resume resettling refugees in third countries, mainly the United States, Canada and Australia. The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees says the agency is deeply shocked by the violence and loss of life.
