今天我們要講兩個和人的腦子有關的習慣用語。“腦子”這個名詞翻成英文就是"brain"。我們首先要給大家介紹的一個常用語是：brainchild。Brainchild是一個字。大家已經知道，brain是指腦子，child就是孩子的意思。在一般口語裏，brain和child這兩個字合在一起的意思就是：腦子裏產生的一個想法。例如，我們可以說：
例句-1: The electric light bulb is the brainchild of Thomas Edison, the telephone is the brainchild of Alexander Graham Bell, two 19th-century American inventors.
這句話翻成中文就是：電燈泡是愛迪生發明的，電話是貝爾發明的。這兩人都是美國十九世紀的發明家。
Brainchild不一定要像那些偉大發明家的發明創造。一般人都會有brainchild。下面是一個學生在談他的老師：
例句-2: To set up a foundation in our college to help poor students was the brainchild of our sociology professor.
這個學生說：在我們學校裏成立一個幫助貧困學生的基金會，這是我們社會學教授想出來的主意。

Brainchild是某人頭腦裏主動產生的產物。那麼，要是我們想利用別人的智慧，那該怎麼說呢？在這種情況下，美國人經常說：to pick one's brain。Pick這個字的意思就是揀什麼東西的“揀”。To pick one's brain就是向別人了解情況，或是徵求精通某個問題的專家的意見。我們來舉個例子。一個報館的記者正在寫一篇報道，介紹新發明的一種特效藥。他說：
例句-3: I don't understand all this scientific language. I'd better go see Doctor Rogers at the medical school and pick his brain; maybe he can make it clear to me.
這位記者說：我是不懂這些科學名詞。我還是到醫學院去請教羅傑斯大夫吧，沒準他能把問題給我解釋清楚。
在美國，to pick one's brain是非常普遍的一種現象，因為美國人喜歡各述己見，進行辯論，然後看看誰的意見更合理。不管世界其他地方上或是在美國發生了什麼事，電臺和電視臺都會請一些專家來談談他們對問題的看法，這實際上也是to pick their brains。我們再來舉個例子吧：
例句-4: People all say that Mary is very smart. Yes, she is. But you have to know the reason why she is smart is because she always picks other people's brains.
這句話是說：人們都說瑪麗這個人非常聰明。是的，她確實非常聰明。但是，你們得知道她之所以聰明是因為她老是聽取別人的意見。
