今天我們還要講兩個帶有devil這個詞的習慣用語。我們上次學到devil就是魔鬼。在西方文藝作品裏，與被稱為罪惡之靈的魔鬼打交道總不會有好下場。魔鬼往往會用金錢、地位、美女等使你眼花撩亂，來引誘你上鉤，到頭來要你還債的時候就麻煩了。
今天我們要講的第一個習慣用語就出自這兒。這個習慣用語是：There's going to be the devil to pay. 這個習慣用語從字面意思看來就是：如果你和魔鬼作交易，你最終會自討苦吃。但是這句話用在日常生活中又是什麼意思呢？
讓我們聽下面這個例子，體會一下它的意思。這是哥哥在數落他莽撞的弟弟，因為弟弟剛才闖了禍，把爸爸的汽車撞壞了。好，我們來聽這個例子：
例句-1: Oh, oh, Bill! Wait till dad sees what you did to his car! You know how much he loves that car - there's going to be the devil to pay as soon as he gets home.
這位哥哥說，“哎呀，Bill，等爸爸看到你把他的車弄成什麼樣。你就糟了。你知道爸爸有多心疼那車，他一回來就夠你受的。”
可想而知，老爸一看到那車就會火冒三丈，大罵闖禍的兒子，給他一個難忘的教訓。所以there's going to be the devil to pay其實意思就是你幹的事兒將會給你招惹好大的麻煩。

接下來我們還要聽一個例子，裏面也有習慣用語there's going to be the devil to pay。這是辦公室主管在提醒手下工作人員趕快把一份逾期未交的報告交上去，以免引起更為嚴重的問題。請你仔細聽，在這段話裏there's going to be the devil to pay表達什麼意思。
例句2：It's already two weeks late. No matter how long it takes, you have to finish it tonight. There's going to be the devil to pay if it's not on the boss's desk in the morning.
那位辦公室主管說：“報告已經晚了兩星期了。你今晚不論花多長時間，都必須把它完成。如果明天一早還不交到老闆的辦公桌上的話，你可有大麻煩了。”
這個例子裏的There's going to be the devil to pay表達的意思是：某一項工作沒有完成會造成很大的麻煩。

我們今天要學的第二個習慣用語是：give the devil his due. Due在這兒的意思是應得的報酬或者回報。從字面意思看來give the devil his due這個習慣用語就解釋：“給魔鬼應得的回報”。我們常說：好有好報，惡有惡報。那麼give the devil his due是不是“惡有惡報”的意思呢？請你聽了下面這個例子再做判斷。
例子3：That man has been stealing, fighting and selling drugs. But give the devil his due - when he saw the little girl fall into the river, he risked his life to save her.
這段話說：“那人偷竊、打鬥、販毒...無惡不作，但是平心而論也不能抹煞他做的一件好事。當他看到那小姑娘掉進河裏的時候，他冒著生命危險救了她。”
從這個例子看來give the devil his due含意是盡幹壞事的人做了好事，也不能抹煞他的功績。

Give the devil his due這個習慣用語起始於好幾百年前當大家都真把魔鬼當回事的時候，當時很多人認為幹壞事的人就是魔鬼附身，把魔鬼和壞蛋劃上了等號。但是隨著時代的進展devil這個詞的意義也在發展。如今devil不一定就指惡人。
讓我們再聽一個例子，這是一個政界人士在私下和朋友說幾句知心話，評論屬於對立派別的另一個人。他們正竭盡全力阻撓這個人當選為議員。在聽之前我們得學一個生詞，elect. Elect解釋為“選舉”。而get elected意思就是“當選”。好，我們來聽聽這位政界人士怎樣評論他的政敵Bill。
例句4：We're doing everything we can to beat Bill. But to give the devil his due, he's honest, knows a lot, and would probably do a good job if he gets elected.
這位反對Bill的人說：“我們正在全力以赴試圖擊敗Bill，但是平心而論Bill有不少優點，他為人誠實、知識豐富。如果當選很可能會工作的很出色。”
從這個例子可以看出give the devil his due帶有的含義是：實事求是地看問題，承認別人的優點。
