我們今天要講的習慣用語有一個共同的詞: stand。我們要學的第一個習慣用語是: stand-out。這兒在stand和out之間有一個連詞符號。 Stand-out當名詞用。它和形容詞outstanding意義相關連。不少人知道outstanding解釋傑出的。那麼stand-out就必然是鶴立雞群的人或者物了。我們來聽個例子，說的是一個成績出色的學生Jennifer。
例句-1：Jennifer gets all A's in her courses. In the fall, she's going to Harvard to study chemical engineering. She's a real stand-out.
他說：Jennifer學業成績全優。今年秋天她將上哈佛大學學化學工程。她真是個傑出人才。
這兒stand-out意思是才華出眾的人。

我們來學下一個習慣用語: stand the heat。在這兒stand是動詞，解釋忍受。Stand the heat來自這樣一句俗語: If you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen. 這句話如果直譯就是：要是你受不了熱，就別待在廚房裏。誰都知道大熱天在火辣辣的爐子旁操作的廚師是多麼能吃苦耐勞，所以這句話的含意就是，果你吃不起苦就別幹那一行。這句話當然不只是用來說廚師的工作，因為各行各業其中都有苦衷，甚至高高在上的總統也不例外。好，我們來聽個說總統的例子吧。
例句-2：The president is always complaining about the way the press treats him. He asked for the job, though, didn't he? What I say is, if he can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen.
他說：總統老是抱怨報界對他的態度，然而不是他自己要擔任總統的嗎?我認為他要是受不了批評指責，就別坐總統這個位子。

我們再來學一個習慣用語: stand-up。Stand-up在這兒不是動詞短語，不是“站起來”的意思。它是形容詞短語，它可以有許多不同意義。我們有時候說，a stand-up guy， 意思是“頂天立地的漢子”。我們有時也說，a stand-up comic。Comic是喜劇演員。A stand-up comic指在夜總會對觀眾說笑逗樂、表演幽默獨腳戲的演員。人們有時還說，stand sb. up。這又是什麼意思呢? 讓我們來聽個例子吧。說話的人很生女朋友Lisa的氣。我們來聽聽為什麼。
例句-3：I had a date with Lisa at the movies last Saturday but she never showed up. She said her car broke down, but I think she's lying - I'm afraid she stood me up for some other guy.
他說： 我和Lisa約好上星期六去看電影，但是她根本沒來。她說她的車拋錨了，但是我覺得她在撒謊，恐怕她是為了跟別人約會而存心失約的。
所以stand sb. up是存心失某人的約。

我們還要學一個習慣用語: stand pat。Pat是打撲克拿到的一手好牌。Stand pat這句話起源於十九世紀晚期。玩撲克的時候如果輪到你補牌但是你有一手pat， 也就是手上的牌很好，你拿定主意不補牌來換手上的牌。你就說，stand pat。逐漸stand pat被用來表示堅定不移、決不改變主意。讓我們聽個例子，這是父親跟他十多歲的兒子說的話:
例句-4：Look, I'm not going to argue with you any more - no, you can't use the car tonight! That's my decision and I'm standing pat on it.
他說：我可不跟你多費口舌了，你今晚絕對不能用車!這已經定了。我決不會改變主意。
所以stand pat意思就是打定主意，決不動搖。
