美國習慣用語第346講
我們今天要講的習慣用語都有這樣一個詞nerve。Nerve通常解釋為“神經”，但是有時它的意思是“勇氣”。例如在我們要學的第一個習慣用語裏: get up the nerve。我們來聽個例子。
這是一名職員認為領導忽視了他的業績。他的工作該得到更高的報酬。我們來聽聽他有什麼打算。注意裏面get up the nerve是什麼意思。
例句-1：I'm trying to get up the nerve to walk in and tell my boss I want a 20% raise or I'll look for another job where they'll pay me what I'm really worth.
他說：他打算到老闆的辦公室去要求加薪百分之二十，否則他要另謀高就，到願意付給他應得報酬的地方去工作。
可想而知，他得鼓起勇氣才能這樣做，因為他可能會冒犯老闆甚至失去目前工作，所以這裡get up the nerve意思是鼓起勇氣。
有時候這個習慣用語用work代替get，成為work up the nerve。我們再聽個例子。說話的人很希望向他所鍾情的女孩求婚，但卻一直怯于啟齒。我們來聽聽他是怎麼說的:

我們再來學個習慣用語: have got a lot of nerve。在這個習慣用語裏，nerve不再解釋為“神經”或者“勇氣”，而是“魯莽”。我們來聽個例子。這是一對夫妻為了各自的花費在吵架。我們來聽聽丈夫怎麼指責他太太。注意裏面用的習慣用語have got a lot of nerve是什麼意思。
例句-3：You've really got a lot of nerve telling me I spend too much money! Remember, you are the one who goes up to New York every month and brings back a thousand dollars worth of stuff.
那丈夫對妻子的指責非常冒火，因為這位太太每個月都得去一次紐約，而且每次去總要買回來價值一千美元的東西。
這樣聽來這位太太自己才真是奢華，然而她卻反而責備丈夫花錢太多。這當然使得丈夫相當憤憤不平，於是說太太: you've really got a lot of nerve telling me I spend too much money...， 意思是你竟膽敢說我花錢太多...， 所以have got a lot of nerve是用來指責對方厚臉皮，或者太魯莽的說法。
這個習慣用語通常是爭論中用的。還有一個習慣用語和這個說法意思一樣，而且也常用在爭吵的時候。它是: of all the nerve。Of all the nerve和have got a lot of nerve都可以用來說對方太莽撞甚至厚顏無恥。讓我們來聽聽辦公室裏一個人怎樣責罵他的同事。
例句-4：Of all the nerve! How dare you criticize me for being late in the morning. You're the one who sneak out half an hour early - at least I work a full eight hours every day!
他說：你可真蠻橫! 竟然敢說我早上遲到。你自己才提早半小時溜出去呢。我至少每天都做足八小時。
所以這裡of all the nerve也是用來說對方說話莽撞、蠻橫的。此外美國人還喜歡借用依地語中的一個詞彙代替nerve這個詞來指責別人蠻橫或者厚顏無恥。這個詞是: chutzpah。最有名的一個例子是說一個謀害雙親的殺人犯的:
例句-5：The man murdered his father and mother, but at his trial he had the chutzpah to tell the judge that he shouldn't be sent to prison because his parents were dead and he was an orphan.
這人謀害了他的父母，但是在審判中他竟然恬不知恥地對法官說，他不該坐牢，因為他父母雙亡，是個孤兒。
這裡had the chutzpah to tell the judge意思是“恬不知恥地對法官說”。
