當別人提到猴子的時候，你腦子裏會出現一個什麼形像呢？一般來說，人們認為猴子是一個很聰敏的動物，大家都喜歡觀察它們，這是因為猴子的行動往往跟人很像。它們也確實和人一樣有的時候很調皮、愛耍花招。美國的成語和俗語也反應了猴子的這些特點。今天我們要講的兩個習慣用語就是和猴子的特性有關的。我們要介紹的第一個俗語就是：monkey business。 Monkey 就是猴子的意思， business 是指做生意或辦什麼事。但是 monkey 和 business 兩個字合在一起用的時候，它們的意思就變了。 Monkey business 是指不道德或不合法的行為，往往是偷偷摸摸和具有欺騙性的行為，例如盜用公款等。下面我們來舉一個例子：
例句-1: "The newspapers say there's a lot of monkey business going on at city hall, with officials getting money under the table from people who want the contract to build the new airport."
這句話的意思是：“有些報紙說，市政府裏有許多見不得人的事，有的營造商為了從市政府獲得建造新機場的合同而偷偷地用錢賄賂市政府的官員。”
Monkey business 不一定指當官的人貪污腐化，一般人當中也可能出現不軌行為，下面這個人說的就是一個例子：
例句-2: "I think there's some kind of monkey business going on in that house across the street. People going in and out all day long; maybe they're selling drugs or something."
這個人說：“我看對馬路那個房子裏的人一定在進行一些不正當的勾當。一天到晚老有人進進出出，他們可能在販毒，或搞其他什麼鬼名堂！”
下面我們要講的一個和 monkey 有關的俗語是 to make a monkey out of somebody。 Somebody 是指某個人。To make a monkey out of somebody 這個俗語的意思是：把某人弄得好像一個傻瓜一樣。下面我們來舉一個例子：
例句-3: "My friend Pete made a monkey out of me the other day. He told me the party Saturday night was formal, so I wore a suit and tie. But everybody else there was wearing a tee-shirt and blue jeans. It sure made me feel like a fool."
這個人說：“我的朋友皮特那天真把我弄得像個傻瓜一樣。他告訴我星期六晚上的聚會是很正式的，所以我就穿上西裝，戴上領帶。可是其他人都穿園領衫和牛仔庫。我真感到自己好像是個傻瓜一樣。”
在一般情況下，人們總是設法把別人弄得很傻，但是也有人由於自己的行為不當而把自己弄得像個傻瓜蛋一樣。例如，下面這個人在說的這個孩子就是如此：
例句-4: "Tom made a monkey out of himself by jumping up and down and yelling when his father wouldn't let him go to the movie."
這個人說：“湯姆因為他爸爸不讓他去看電影就一個勁地上下亂跳，嘴巴裏還大聲亂叫，簡直把自己弄得像個傻瓜一樣。”
