Hansen held the record of  2:08.50 minutes until Japanese rival Kosuke Kitajima smashed it by nearly one second on June 7 (2:07.51).

On Thursday at the U.S. Olympic swimming trials in Omaha, Nebraska, Hansen was nearly three seconds slower (2:11.37) than his best time, which remains an American record.

Hansen is on the Olympic team in the 100-meter breaststroke and could qualify in the 400-meter medley relay.

Katie Hoff, who qualified for four individual events and one relay, failed to advance out of the semifinals of the 100-meter freestyle.  That ended her bid for as many as eight medals at the Olympics.
