The mayor of the upper midwestern city of Detroit, Michigan has agreed to step down from office and plead guilty to two felony misconduct charges that stem from a sex scandal.

Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick admitted to two counts of obstruction of justice Thursday in a Michigan courtroom, after his lawyers struck a deal with prosecutors. As part of the plea agreement, Kilpatrick must serve four months in jail and pay $1 million in restitution.

He also is barred from holding public office for five years. The 38-year-old Kilpatrick has been Detroit mayor since 2002.

The mayor, who is married, was indicted in March for allegedly lying under oath about an affair with his female chief of staff, and his role in the firing of police officials. Both Kilpatrick and the aide were charged with perjury, misconduct and obstruction of justice.

Detroit is the 11th largest city in the U.S., with a population of more than 950,000 people.
