Afghan and NATO officials say a NATO soldier and an Afghan policeman have been killed during an attack in eastern Paktia province.

Afghan media and local officials say the policeman reportedly opened fire on troops during a dispute at a police station. The soldiers then fired back killing the policeman.

The nationality of the soldier was not released, though reports suggest the soldier was most likely American.

In other news, Afghan officials say an attack on a politician left four of his bodyguards dead.

Officials say gunmen in the southern city of Kandahar tried to kill Mohammad Hashim during the attack late Sunday.
