 An important part of any negotiation is making a proposal.
 
 Eliz: What exactly is a proposal?
 
 Gary: A proposal is a suggestion.
 
 When you make a proposal, you say what you would like.
 
 Eliz: But what if the other side doesn’t like your proposal?
 
 Gary: Then they usually make a counter-proposal.
 
 Eliz: A counter-proposal?
 
 Gary: Yes, a counter-proposal is a new proposal, a new suggestion.
 
 The two sides keep making suggestions until you both agree.
 
 Eliz: And if we can’t agree?
 
 Gary: Then the negotiations break down.  They fail.
 
 For example... let’s say that you are selling a car for one thousand dollars.
 
 That’s your proposal.
 
 I tell you that I’ll pay five hundred dollars.  That’s my counter-proposal.
